i want to kill all the bacteria in my brush, was planning on washing them with white spirits and then washing out the white spirits with a facial wash. Will this be too harsh on my skin when i use it again? help! Can i clean my makeup brushes with white spirits?
i guess that depends on what the bristles of your brush are made of.
if synthetic bristles, i wouldn't use any kind of spirits, since sometimes nylon and polyester and things like that can be sorta melted (i've ruined a few artist brushes that way.) the special makeup-brush cleaner or special artist brush cleaner/conditioner might be best.
if you have natural bristles (usually sable or some other kind of soft hair/fur) i wouldn't use anything you wouldn't put in your own hair. i always clean mine with whatever shampoo i have in my shower. and about ever third time i wash my brushes, i condition them too, then shampoo that out.
don't use water that's too hot either, sometimes that can loosen the glues that hold the bristles in. again, about the temperature you would use on your own hair is best.
washing them won't sterilize them, but you really don't need them sterile, just clean. and as another answerer said, dry them flat. i usually squeeze the water out (gently!) , then give the brush a good hard shake, then shape it and lay it on a towel to dry.Can i clean my makeup brushes with white spirits?
This will damage the bristles and it will make application with these brushes a tougher task. Use Sephora's brush shampoo better. Less expensive too! Just wash the brushes with warm water and the shampoo and let it air dry. Do NOT stand the brushes up for air drying or even put them in the case (or on a stand). Let them lay on a table.
*This will kill the bacteria, save you lots of money, and will not damage the brushes and bristles.
